5 Steps to Winterize Your Underground Sprinkler System in Brampton

Winterizing your sprinkler system

Winterizing your sprinkler system will keep it running longer and working better. Here are five steps that will help you prepare yours for winter. Your lawn will thank you when you water it next spring.

  1. Set Up the Compressor: Clear water out of your sprinkler system in cold weather using an air compressor. This needs to be done zone by zone. Set the air pressure of the compressor to a maximum of 80 psi in the regulator for a sturdy PVC pipe system, or 50 psi for a flexible polyethylene pipe system. Start the compressor at full volume and then turn off the water supply.
  2. Follow the Hook-Up Method: Close the valves on the backflow preventer. This is vital as the air compressor can damage it otherwise.

Next, remove the blow-out port plug, screw in a hose adapter, and connect the compressor’s air pipe. This will create the pressure needed to blow out water from each zone.
  3. Blow Out Water from the Line: Connect the other end of the air hose to the compressor for blowing out the line. Now, the sprinkler heads will spit out water.

Next, disconnect the hose when the pipe runs dry. The sprinkler now will start spitting and misting. Do not overdo the blowout. Move on to the next zone.
  4. Keep Your Valves to 45 Degrees: When water is blown out from all the zones, turn the valves on your backflow preventer to 45 degrees. You can do this on the small cock valves first using a flathead screwdriver.
  5. Shut Off the Controller and Add Insulation Covers: Once you have blown out the water from each sprinkler zone, turn off the main controller for the winter. You can also keep it in standby mode.

Next, you need to cover the system with insulation tapes and foam covers to keep them safe from frigid temperatures. You should wrap the main shut-off along with the exposed pipes and backflow preventers. Be sure not to block the air vents.

Follow these steps to winterize your sprinkler system. Or hire professionals to do the job. There are several reputable companies providing sprinkler system winterization services in Brampton.
